Portfolio Review 2

Writer's picture: Jack HillJack Hill

This post will be looking at a design who has been in the industry for some time, and how their website compares to others who have less experience and also how I can use this site to help improve mine.

First look:

When opening this site it is instantly clear that the author has a lot of experience in games design, not only as they say so in this first line; the site also shows a high profile AAA game they are currently working on, at the time of writing this is The Last of Us Part 2. scrolling down we can also see other AAA title they have worked on, we then get to older and personal projects at the bottom of the main page. At first glance the page is fairly basic in terms of its looks, it does, however, provide all the important information you would want upfront, making it clear to the reader who the author is, what they do and what they have worked on.

This portfolio differs a lot compared to the first one we looked at, this is because the author is a well-established designer so they do not need to sell themselves as a recent graduate would. This site seems to be aimed more at providing information to the reader rather than convincing the reader on the authors' skill set, as the body of work does that for them. With their more high profile titles front and centre of the site when you open it. all of the relevant information is where it should be, with a short introduction of the author at the beginning of the site and then links to a title they have worked on, where they discuss their contribution the products.

Aesthetic:

The website has a consistent colour scheme throughout of grey and blue, while this simple it does make the site easy to read and gives it consistency. I would personally match the style of the project pages with the games themselves, mainly as working in a AAA studio would give access to high-quality art, or even matching the colour pallet of these pages to that of the main colour pallet of the game.

On the other hand with the backgrounds being as they are your eye is drawn to the projects themselves, making them stand out and become the main focal point of the main page. this then leads you to click on them and find out more about the projects. Overall I feel this page serves its purpose very well, as the author is a well-established designer they don't need to fill the site with flashy graphics to catch the eye, as their impressive body of work does that instead.

Ease of use:

As you would expect from this site everything works as it should and everything is where it should be. there are clear links to contact information throughout the site and the information provided is clear and easy to understand. There is little I can say here because, as you would expect from a AAA designer this site is well put together and easy to navigate. There isn't really anything I would say needs improving on this front.
