With the extra time I now find myself with thanks to the lockdown, and not being able to do much implementation of the game with my home set up I have been looking back over my design. One area that is lacking more than the rest of the design is the story, from looking back it is clear I let the story take a back seat whilst I focused on areas such as the puzzle and level design.
Whilst there is no way around that not being able to make the game is not something, I am happy about, I can use the time to instead tighten up my design. And will be looking at the story to be the first place to do this. The main thing I have noticed when looking over the puzzle designs is that while they do have a story in them, they are singular and not tied to the rest of the game. They instead tell of a specific aspect of Norse mythology but then do not link back to the game in a meaningful way, now that I have the time to redesign these puzzles, I can make them link back to the story of the game. This will also tie into me reinventing the story I have already come up with as now I have the time for design and not much else, I can make them link together in a much more meaningful way than I would have originally. It will just be unfortunate that I will most likely not be able to implement these changes until I have changed my home set up.
My plan going forward will be to spend a week on the areas I want to improve upon with this week being the story, next week the levels and the week after being the puzzles. This will leave with some time near the end of the project to work on changes and improvements suggested by feedback. Though this feedback may not be as comprehensive as I will not be able to get as many people as I would have liked for feedback, I should still;l be able to get some useful insight from them in a way to improve the design.
